At State Street, we feel strongly that as a corporate citizen of this world, we have much to give back to the local communities in which we live and work. We strive to do this through programmes that encourage employee volunteerism and establish a means for socially responsible corporate contributions to not-for-profit organisations that provide targeted community service initiatives.
State Street's Global Outreach programme recognises the difference that committed volunteers bring to effecting change in a community's quality of life. The programme matches State Street employee volunteers and community organisations requiring assistance. Although all employees are encouraged to volunteer on their own time, State Street also provides employees a 'volunteer release' day, a paid workday available to use for volunteer activity.
Volunteer events in 2001 included: Habitat for Humanity as part of Global Volunteer Day on 5 December, Karla 51, Offene Behindertenarbeit and "Secret Angels."
Our Global Philanthropy programme is funded by the State Street Foundation, a non-profit, tax-exempt charitable trust that manages the allocation and distribution of grants, and provides financial support to targeted community service initiatives around the world. Since 2000, this programme has made grants to community organisations in Germany totaling EUR 60,000.
Key recipients of grants from State Street's Global Philanthropy programme in Germany include:
Münchner Tafel e.V.
The Münchner Tafel was founded in 1994 taking "City Harvest" in the US and "Die
Berliner Tafel" as a model. Volunteers collect food donations, which are
then passed on to social organizations, homeless people or people in need. The
organization also has "eighteen bus-stops" in Munich where they go once
per week and distribute food to people in need. Münchner Tafel reaches about
11,000 people per week and distributes approximately 60-70 tons of food. The organization
finances itself through membership fees and donations. They need financial support
to support the small vans, with which they distribute the food (gas, insurance
etc.), office costs, and the food they buy if the food donated is not sufficient.

Kinderschutzzentrum des Deutschen Kinderschutzbundes
Ortsverband Muenchen e.V.
Located in more than 400 cities throughout Germany, the Kinderschutzzentrum des Deutschen Kinderschutzbundes provides a variety of assistance programmes for children and their families, including a mental health help line for children and teenagers; an advice centre on managing violence against children; programmes against child poverty and visits to children who are ill. The organisation is funded through a variety of means, including cash donations, sponsorship of a specific project, or membership in the organisation.
State Street is currently supporting one of the group's initiatives, an innovative school project called "Komm wir finden eine Lösung," which means "violence prevention through solving conflicts in elementary schools." The project's concept of "Let's find a solution" is addressed in four training modules and is designed to teach children how to cope with conflict and develop social competencies in order to help prevent the development of aggressive or violent tendencies.
Kinderschutz- u. Mutterschutz e.V. Munich residents founded the Kinderschutz- u. Mutterschutz e.V. in the 1920s with the goal of protecting children from abuse and neglect. The KuM works in coalition with Jugendämter (Youth Services) and other organisations aimed at providing assistance and counseling to children, teenagers and families, with a focus on orphans, refugees and children that come from homes in crisis. For underage refugees in Germany, the KuM helps to arrange for guardians, locate relatives, provide language assistance and arrange for vital documents such as passports and birth certificates. The KuM also runs group homes for problem youths with the hope of integrating the children back into family homes, preparing them for placement into foster care, or providing the necessary skills for long-term independent living in or out of group homes.
Kibs Project State Street has been a supporter of the Kibs Project, a programme that advises, supports and cares for children, juveniles and young adults (predominantly male) between the ages of 10 and 21 who have experienced sexual abuse. Kibs' activities include providing short- and long-term support, group activities for victims and their parents, and training and public relations initiatives to help raise awareness on the issue.
Hospizgruppe Da-Sein e.V.

The hospice works to enable the patients to maintain dignity and self-respect for the remainder of their life and to minimise suffering, while helping patients follow their individual interests and take an active part in daily life. A further important goal of the organisation is to provide comprehensive support for patients' relatives and loved ones both before and after death, including support in handling financial matters.
Hospizgruppe Da-Sein e.V. operates solely on donations, and State Street's grant supports the organisation's staff of volunteers who work to form a team with doctors, nurses and families to provide care and, when possible, to allow the patients to remain at home, surrounded by their loved ones.
Elterninitiative krebskranker Kinder München e.V.
Elterninitiative krebskrankranker Kinder München e.V. provides psychological and financial support for children suffering from cancer who are being treated in Munich. Stiftung Hilfe für Familie, Mutter und Kind
The foundation "Hilfe für Familie, Mutter und Kind" ("Help for families, mothers and children") of the free state of Saxonia provides financial support to families who have come into an emergency situation through a tragic event. Financial support from the foundation aims to stabilize the life base of the affected families. At the same time the foundation also provides financial support to pregnant women in emergency and conflict situations. The foundation was supported by State Street in 2002 after many families with children faced emergency situations due to the devastating floods that hit the free state of Saxonia in August. The donation, which came from State Street's Disaster Relief Fund, was primarily intended to support families with at least three children.
